Every winter, as the first snowflakes touch down on Seattle like shy houseguests, a certain madness awakens in this city. Suddenly every sloped street becomes a potential Olympic training run. And after forty years of watching Seattleites attempt gravity’s work with everything from snowboards to laundry baskets, I feel qualified — spiritually, emotionally, and as an insurance-averse real estate broker — to offer this essential guide.
If you’ve ever thought, “I’d like to see my life flash before my eyes, but faster,” this is your hill.
The Counterbalance is steep enough to make seasoned skiers reconsider their wills. You’ll fly past multimillion-dollar condos, astonished pedestrians, and at least one dog that’s absolutely judging your choices. Pro tip: if you start sliding, aim for a hedge. They’re softer than BMWs.
Denny Way in the snow is less a street and more a metaphysical lesson. You don’t ski it — you surrender to it.
The upside? You’ll reach South Lake Union faster than any form of public transit.
The downside? You may become part of it.
Want a side of Seattle history with your broken tailbone? Yesler has been sending people downhill at high speeds since the 1800s. Lumbermen did it. Delivery wagons did it. Now, apparently, so do tech workers with snowboards they haven’t waxed since college.
Rumor says the ghosts of old loggers cheer when someone wipes out. I can’t confirm this, but it feels true.
Here’s where the actual fun begins. On snow days, Queen Anne transforms into a charming alpine village — if the Alps had Subarus parked at 45-degree angles.
Kids sled. Adults pretend they’re too old for sledding. Everyone lies.
If you must snowboard in the city, do it here. The neighbors will applaud you (or film you — same thing now).
Is it legal? Probably.
Is it smart? Debatable.
Is it fun? Undeniably.
A short-but-sweet slope surrounded by trees and the occasional confused raccoon. Treat it with respect. The raccoon demands it.
Seattle is not a ski resort — but once or twice a winter, it becomes one anyway, whether we like it or not. And honestly? That chaos is part of this city’s charm.
Just remember:
Gravity always wins.
Cars have no dignity in the snow.
And if you do decide to snowboard down Queen Anne…
Please don’t put me as your emergency contact.
